Kobelco Crane Parts: A Cost Controller's Guide to Buying Genuine vs. Aftermarket (With Real Numbers)

Here's the uncomfortable truth about crane parts: there is no universal 'best' option. I've spent the last 8 years managing procurement for a mid-sized rental fleet. How to Know Which Scenario You're In

  2. Hours of operation — If the machine runs 1,500+ hours/year, you're in Scenario B (high utilization). Under 800 hours/year? Scenario C.
  3. Warranty status — Still under warranty? Scenario A.
  4. Failure history — Keep a log. I track every part failure and its root cause. If aftermarket parts are failing twice as often on a certain component, don't use them there.

If you're still unsure, start with Scenario C. Use genuine for critical parts, experiment with aftermarket for non-critical ones, and track everything. After 6 months, you'll have enough data to make a real decision.

One last thing: be honest with yourself about your maintenance capacity. If your team can't handle unexpected failures—or if you don't have backup equipment—lean towards genuine parts. The cost of downtime is almost always higher than the premium for peace of mind.

The goal isn't to spend less money on parts. It's to minimize total cost of ownership across your entire fleet. And that means knowing when to say 'this isn't our strength' and paying for the part that will actually get the job done—whether it's genuine Kobelco or a well-chosen aftermarket component.
