Kobelco Mini Excavator Tracks: A Quality Inspector's Checklist

Who This Checklist Is For

If you're the person who orders or receives undercarriage parts for a Kobelco mini excavator, this checklist is for you. I'm a quality and compliance manager at a construction equipment parts distributor, not an engineer, and I don't design undercarriages. But I've reviewed 200+ track assemblies a year for the past six years, and I've rejected enough first deliveries to know where the failures hide.

In 2019, we received a batch of rails for a Kobelco excavator 140 that looked right on paper. Or rather, it looked right on the packing list. The bushing diameter was off by 0.4mm, and two machines threw tracks on the same job. That mistake cost us a $22,000 redo and a delayed project. Since then, I've used a set of steps that catches this kind of problem before the parts leave the warehouse.

Some of the old rules for track inspection changed by 2025. Measurement tools that used to cost big money are now cheap, and rubber compounds on mini excavator tracks are not the same as they were in 2020. But the fundamentals haven't changed: verify the part, measure with the track under tension, and don't trust the label.

Step 1: Confirm the Part Number, Not the Model Name

Calling it 'a Kobelco excavator 140' is not enough. The SK140 line has several variants, and within one model, track pitch and bushing diameter can change by year. If you order by model name alone, you're guessing. Get the machine serial number, the old part, or a parts manual.

When the new parts arrive, inspect the stamped part number on the chain itself. The label on the box is a starting point. No, wait—it's a hint. It's not proof. We once received a set labeled for the right model, but the rail was stamped with a different pitch. The vendor called it 'within industry standard.' We rejected the batch, and they redid it at their cost. Now every contract includes the exact part number and pitch requirements.

Step 2: Measure Wear on a Tensioned Track

Most track wear checks are done on a machine with a loose track. That's wrong. A loose track lets the chain sag, so your measurement point moves depending on where the track settles. Set the machine on hard, level ground. Use the track adjuster to take out the slack. Then measure pad height and bushing diameter at the point where the track contacts the ground.

Track tension should be within the factory spec, not 'as tight as you can get it.' A track that's too tight will grind down the sprocket and idler. A track that's too loose will slap and can derail. The old 'eyeball it' routine might work for a quick check, but for a purchasing decision you need numbers.

Step 3: Look at the Sprocket Teeth

A worn sprocket has a 'hook' on the trailing edge of the tooth. That shape tells you the pitch has worn out of sync. If you install new Kobelco mini excavator tracks onto a machine with hooked sprockets, the new track will wear out fast.

Check the idler, too. Flat spots mean the track has been slipping. A lot of times people replace the track and leave the idler, then wonder why the new track makes noise. The sprocket and idler are part of the track system, not optional extras.

Step 4: Use the Eyebrow Test for Rubber Tracks

Most Kobelco mini excavators run rubber tracks. For those, do what I call the eyebrow test. Run your hand along the inner edge of the track (or use a small flashlight if you'd rather not touch the grease), just above the drive lugs. If the rubber has lifted and formed a ridge, it looks like an eyebrow. That's the start of internal separation, and it won't heal.

Also check for cuts deeper than 10mm on the tread face. A surface nick is fine. A cut that exposes the embedded braid is a future failure. If you see it on a machine that's still under warranty, photograph it and call your supplier before the crack grows.

Step 5: Clean It Before You Judge It

Packed mud hides cracks. A track that looks worn might just be dirty. We use an air compressor in the shop to blow out debris before measuring. Last month, one of our supplier's service trucks—a Mustang truck with a compressor mounted in the bed—pulled up to a job site to inspect a rental machine. The driver blew out the undercarriage before taking a single measurement. It seemed obvious, but you'd be surprised how many inspectors measure a muddy track.

While you're down there, inspect the grease fittings and seals. A torn dust seal on the track adjuster lets dirt in and can ruin the adjuster. If a grease fitting is damaged, replace it before you measure. The job is messy. That's not a reason to skip it.

Step 6: Photograph Everything With a Scale Reference

Since 2020, more parts are bought remotely. Photos are part of the quality record. If you're sending a photo to a supplier or an insurer, put a ruler or a coin next to the damage. I do not care how good your phone's camera is. A photo of a track without a scale is just a photo.

Take one photo of the part number, one of the wear measurement, and one of the overall track. That's enough. The photo tells the next person in the chain exactly what you saw.

Step 7: Keep a Reject Log

This is the step most people skip. When you reject a part, write down the vendor, the part number, the reason, and the measurement that failed. In Q1 2024, our reject log showed 3.4% of first deliveries had bushing height variance outside our tolerance. Before we kept the log, we had 'a feeling' it was happening. The log turned a feeling into a contract requirement.

It doesn't need to be fancy. A spreadsheet works. The act of writing down the measurement makes you more careful. It also gives you a way to compare vendors with data instead of memory.

If you're looking for 'crane fly vs mosquito,' you're probably not shopping for excavator parts. But the comparison is actually useful here. Crane flies look like giant mosquitoes but they don't bite. Track wear can look like a major failure when it's just a loose track or a clogged grease fitting. Mosquitoes, on the other hand, are small but carry disease. A tiny hydraulic leak on a track motor can seem harmless and then destroy the whole undercarriage. Don't overreact to the crane fly, and don't ignore the mosquito.

Notes From the Field

A few things that don't fit neatly into a step:

  • Tension adjustments: Tightening a track too much is as bad as leaving it loose. Follow the manual's sag spec, not the rule 'tight as possible.'
  • Compatible parts: 'Compatible' does not mean 'same.' I'm not saying aftermarket parts are always bad. I'm saying verify the spec, not just the price.
  • Cheap parts: People think expensive parts cost more because of the brand. The reality is that parts with verified specs can command a premium because they work. The cheap one can cost more in downtime.

This checklist works for us, but our situation is a distribution shop with predictable inventory. If you're a contractor running one machine, you may not need a reject log. The fundamentals—clean, measured, documented—still apply.

As of December 2024, undercarriage specs have shifted again because newer machines are heavier and put more stress on tracks. The best practice from 2020 may not apply in 2025. Measure, document, and reject bad parts before they reach the machine.
