Used Kobelco Excavator Checklist: 7 Steps That Would've Saved Me $14,000

I've never fully understood the "crane vs heron" question that brings some people here. They're both wading birds, sure, so they look similar. But "crane" also happens to be the name of a very large machine we use on job sites. If you're here to identify birds, this article won't help. Take it from someone who bought a used SK210 in 2022 and turned a $38,000 "deal" into a $52,000 mistake. This checklist came out of that experience and every purchase I've made since. Seven steps total. Some are obvious. One or two you've probably never considered. All of them together would've saved me about $14,000.

Step 1: Verify the Hours — Don't Trust the Display

Here's what I learned the hard way: the hour meter on that SK210 showed 4,200 hours. Clean looking. Reasonable for the year. I asked the seller about it, and he said, "Yeah, it's all original."

Then, on the first full shift, the display skipped a few hours. Then it went backwards. The gauge cluster had been swapped. My mechanic put actual engine hours at over 7,000 based on cylinder wear and overall condition. That gap changed the machine's value by about 40%.

Instead, do this:

  • Note the hour meter reading at cold start, then check it again after 30 minutes of running.
  • Compare hour readings against the service records (Step 4 covers this).
  • Look at pedal, handle, and seat wear. Those don't reset with a display swap. (Honestly, I'm not sure why I trusted a digital screen more than my own eyes. My best guess is I wanted to believe the low-hours story.)

Step 2: Walk the Undercarriage Like You Mean It

The undercarriage is where a used Kobelco excavator gets expensive. Not on the day you buy it, but three months later when the track tensioner starts leaking and the sprockets have gone sharp.

Get down on one knee (yes, really) and check:

  • Bushing diameter — use a caliper if you can. Compare it to the spec in the service manual.
  • Sprocket and idler teeth — hooked, pointed, or uneven wear patterns are red flags.
  • Grouser height — if you can't tell how tall the wear bars once were, the tracks have lived a hard life.
  • Rollers — spin them by hand where possible. Growling or roughness means bearings are done.

I once skipped all of this on a newer machine with only 3,100 hours, telling myself mid-size operators don't need that level of detail. I was wrong. The undercarriage was rounded down to the bolts. Replacement quote: about $9,800 (based on OEM parts pricing quotes I got in early 2024; verify current prices).

Step 3: Hydraulic Reality Check

Hydraulics are the machine's bloodstream. Checking them isn't hard, but you need to do it with warm oil — cold oil hides leaks.

  • Warm the machine to operating temperature first.
  • Swing the house, hold the control, and watch for drift. Two or three degrees might be acceptable. More than that points to a worn valve or cylinder.
  • Cycle the boom and arm full-range at idle, then full throttle. Listen for knocking, whining, or jerky movement.
  • Check all cylinder seals for seepage. A film of oil is one thing. Drips hanging off the barrel are another.

The machine I almost bought instead of my SK210 looked fine on the lot. Dry seals. Good pressure. But then I let it idle for a while and the main pump whined like a dying kitchen appliance (ugh, I still remember that sound). That unit went to auction two months later with "hydraulic pump recently rebuilt" in the listing. Good for whoever snagged it cheap, but that was never going to be me.

Also, check auxiliary air systems if the model has one — some excavators run a small air pump for attachment controls or secondary circuits. It's a strange failure point, but I've seen one fail a pre-purchase inspection. Not a dealbreaker by itself, but it's a data point for negotiation.

Step 4: Demand the Maintenance Records — All of Them

This sounds obvious. I thought I had it covered. Turned out "I've got the records" meant "I've got a folder with a few invoices from the last two service intervals."

What you actually want:

  • Service records at regular intervals (250, 500, 1,000 hours).
  • Part replacements with dates and hours. Filters alone aren't proof of care.
  • The equipment's history before the current seller — coastal salt air and inland dust do completely different kinds of damage.

If the seller can't produce records, build that into your offer. Plan a full service cycle right away plus an independent inspection. I budget roughly 5-8% of the purchase price for hidden issues on a machine with no paper trail. That's my own rule of thumb, developed the expensive way.

Step 5: Cold Start Test — The 5 AM Truth

Here's the part nobody enjoys: you need to see the machine start when it's actually cold. Not "warmed up in the yard since 7 AM" cold. Cold.

I understand the awkwardness. Asking a seller to let you show up before first start feels like you don't trust them. But the information is worth it. Slow cranking, ether-assisted starts, thick smoke on ignition, and delayed hydraulic spool-up all tell you things a warm engine hides perfectly.

Set it up properly:

  • Arrive before the machine has been started for the day.
  • Listen to the preheat cycle. It should sound like it's doing something, not struggling.
  • Watch the first startup. A little blue smoke that clears is fine. White or heavy black smoke that lingers means a mechanic needs to look.
  • Run a digging cycle from cold. How long does it take to reach full hydraulic output?

I skipped this once because I was pressed for time. The machine was warm, ran beautifully, looked great. That was the whole problem. Looking back, I should have spent the extra night and arrived early. But given what I knew then — and the pressure to grab the deal before someone else did — the choice made sense. It was still the wrong call.

Step 6: Look for Repaint and Repair Cover-Ups

A tired machine can be made to look fresh with enough paint and patience. I'm not saying every dealer does this. But "refurbished" is a word that covers a lot of stories.

Look for:

  • Overspray on hoses, engine stickers, and glass. The classic.
  • Fresh undercoating in areas where you'd normally see bare metal. Rattle-can black isn't a maintenance record.
  • Paint color mismatch between panels. Could mean replacement parts, which might be fine — or collision damage, which might not.
  • Welds on the boom or arm that don't look factory. Aftermarket repairs can be done correctly, but they need to be evaluated.

A repaint alone isn't disqualifying. A repaint that hides cracks in the boom is a different animal. That's the type of thing that takes a $40,000 machine and adds a $8,000 repair bill. I've got the receipts to prove it.

Step 7: Calculate Total Cost Before You Negotiate — Not After

This is the step that would've saved me the most money, and the one I refuse to skip now.

Total cost of ownership is not the sticker price. It's:

  • The purchase price
  • Transport — and I mean everything: loading, permits, fuel surcharges, and the hauling company that somehow shows up with a squatted truck because they undersized the trailer. That happened to us once. The driver looked as uncomfortable as the truck.
  • Third-party inspection, if you're not doing this checklist yourself
  • Immediate maintenance based on the records (or lack of records) from Step 4
  • Parts availability — check before you buy. Kobelco genuine parts are consistently priced, but some models have longer lead times. Downtime has a cost, and it's not small.
  • Expected repairs in year one. Undercarriage, hoses, pumps — whatever your inspection flagged.

Here's the comparison I learned from. Machine A was listed at $48,000. Machine B was listed at $55,000. Same class, similar year, similar hours on paper.

Machine A needed: undercarriage ($9,800), a full hose set ($2,400), and a hydraulic pump reseal ($1,700). Transport from out of state ($1,800). Total: $63,700 and at least three weeks of downtime.

Machine B needed: an oil change. Total: around $56,300 including transport.

Machine A was "cheaper." It wasn't. Not even close.

Quick Warnings From Someone Who Paid For These Lessons

A few final reminders. I'm passing these along because I made most of these mistakes so you don't have to.

  • "Low hours" doesn't mean well-maintained. Hour meters count time, not abuse. A machine with 4,200 idling hours is a very different machine than one with 4,200 hard digging hours.
  • Always run the machine yourself. If a seller won't let you operate it, that's your answer. Sometimes it's about insurance, so bring your own coverage. But if they still say no, move on.
  • Consider a third-party inspection. It'll run you roughly $500–1,200 (based on quotes I've seen in 2024; verify current rates). On a $50,000 purchase, that's a rounding error. I skipped it once. Never again.

One boundary on all of this: this checklist worked for our operation — a mid-size excavating crew running Kobelco machines for over a decade. If you're buying one machine for a single project, some steps might be overkill. If you're running a large fleet with a dedicated mechanic, you can probably handle more than this list. Your mileage may vary, and that's fine.

Also, I've never fully understood why transparency levels vary so much between equipment sellers. My best guess is that the ones who dodge questions don't have good answers. Buy from the ones who don't dodge.

That's the whole checklist. It's saved us real money on the last three purchases. And if someone had handed this to me back in 2022, I'd be about $14,000 better off. Now I'll just have to settle for helping the next buyer make profit.
