What Is an Excavator? A Quality Inspector's View on the Kobelco SK220 Excavator and Kobelco 1600 Crane

The machine works because the diesel engine drives hydraulic pumps, which send pressurized oil to cylinders and motors. The boom and arm move in a controlled arc, and the bucket cuts or scrapes whatever is in front of it. The operator's skills matter, but so do the machine's base settings.

People usually fixate on bucket capacity or operating weight. In my experience, the more important specs are the hydraulic system, the undercarriage, and the maintenance history. Those determine whether the number on the brochure survives contact with a job site.

The Kobelco SK220 Excavator Taught Me to Check Twice

Everything I'd read about excavators said the spec sheet was the best way to compare machines. In practice, after more than 300 machine inspections, I found the opposite. Two machines with nearly identical specs can behave completely differently depending on how they've been maintained.

I've seen a Kobelco SK220 excavator run smoother at 8,000 hours than another machine at 3,000 hours. The difference wasn't the paint job. The engine was fine, but the brake line had a slow weep. We could have waited until a tech took it out on a long run. We fixed it on a Tuesday morning instead. Nobody wrote a press release about it. That's the point: prevention is quiet.

A few hundred dollars for a brake line is nothing compared to a tow bill and a lost afternoon. That's the logic we apply to every machine that goes through our yard.

It took me four years and about 200 machine evaluations to understand that prevention isn't a personality trait. It's a system. You need checklists, tolerance bands, and someone with authority to stop the line when something doesn't match.

But Isn't Inspection Slow?

Some salespeople tell me that inspecting a machine before delivery feels like we don't trust the factory. I understand the concern. My answer is that inspection isn't about distrust—it's about handoff conditions. Even the best factory can't control what happens during shipping. A machine can sit on a freight ship for weeks, in rain and salt air, before it arrives.

I have mixed feelings about warranties. On one hand, they feel like safety. On the other, I've seen too many arguments over whether a problem existed before delivery or after. A detailed inspection is the cheapest insurance you can buy because it draws the line before the machine changes hands.

I'll be honest: I don't always have time to run every test. A few weeks ago I had 90 minutes to clear a rental machine before a customer pickup. Normally I'd run the full 14-point hydraulic test. Instead, I checked the critical circuits and told the rental coordinator to flag the machine for a follow-up. That's not perfect. But it's better than pretending there's no time pressure.

The customer doesn't have to see the checklist. But the job site will feel it when the machine starts on the first try and finishes the shift without a surprise.

So what is an excavator? It's a tool that turns hydraulic power into movement. But it's also a reminder that machines don't fail without warning. They send small signals first. The trick is to be looking before they become expensive.

I'd rather reject a machine I can fix than approve a machine that breaks later. For a Kobelco SK220 excavator or a Kobelco 1600 crane, the rule is the same: check it before you trust it. Prevention beats repairs. Every time.
