Why I Stopped Saving Money on Excavator Parts – A Buyer's Perspective

Posted on Friday 17th of July 2026 by Jane Smith

I’ll say it plainly: genuine Kobelco parts cost less in the long run.

I manage purchasing for a mid-sized excavation company—about 50 people, three locations. Roughly $200k a year in parts across a dozen vendors. And after five years in this role, I’ve landed on a rule that sounds counterintuitive: pay more upfront, spend less overall. If you think I’m just reciting a supplier pitch, hear me out.

The failure that changed my mind

In 2022, my predecessor ordered a set of aftermarket track chains for our SK210 excavator. Price was great—saved about $1,200 per set (maybe $1,100, I'd have to check the PO). Six months later, a track failed on a jobsite. Downtime cost us $3,000 in lost production plus towing. That “saving” turned into a loss. (Not to mention I had to explain to the ops manager why our machine was down for two days.)

From then on, I started tracking part longevity. A genuine Kobelco drive sprocket on our fleet lasts about 2,500 operating hours. Aftermarket ones? We averaged roughly 1,600 hours before wear became noticeable. Do the math: genuine costs 40% more but delivers 56% more life. The cost per hour is actually lower. Based on our maintenance logs for five excavators over three years—not perfect data, but consistent enough to convince me.

How a fuel pump diagnosis pushed me further into prevention

One thing that really drove home the “prevention over cure” mindset was learning how to tell if a fuel pump is bad. On our SK10 SR-2 mini excavator, we had intermittent hard starts. Instead of waiting for a breakdown on a Monday morning, I watched the technician check fuel pressure, listen for whining sounds, and look for seepage. Catching it early meant a $400 pump replacement instead of a $2,000 injection system overhaul. That experience changed how I evaluate every maintenance decision.

Now I apply the same logic to our Kubota skid steer and even the Dewalt drill batteries in our workshop—check early, replace with quality parts, avoid the domino effect of failures. The principle scales.

Yes, genuine parts feel expensive—but the hesitation is where the trap hides

I remember standing in front of a parts catalog for the SK10 SR-2. The genuine undercarriage kit was $2,800. The aftermarket alternative was $2,100—about 25% cheaper. I kept asking myself: is $700 worth potentially losing a week of production? The upside was saving money on paper. The risk was repeating 2022. I hit “order” on genuine and didn’t relax until the parts arrived. (Which, honestly, they did in three days via our local dealer—faster than some aftermarket suppliers.)

If you ask me, the real cost isn't the part itself. It's the downtime, the delayed project, the reputation hit with your client. A how to tell if fuel pump is bad checklist costs nothing to learn but can save thousands. A genuine kobelco excavators part costs more upfront but includes testing, warranty, and fit certainty.

My recommendation: stop optimizing for purchase price

I know the pressure to cut costs. But I’d argue the smartest procurement strategy minimizes total cost of ownership—not the initial invoice. For our fleet, including the Kubota skid steer and even the Dewalt drill bits we replace monthly, I apply the same rule: invest in durability, catch issues early, and never ignore that nagging feeling that a “deal” might be too good.

Prices as of early 2025; verify current rates with your dealer. But the math hasn’t changed for us: prevention pays.
